Altered Nut Can & Paint Cans (see below)
Level of difficulty: Advanced

This is a fun project, I used an old nut can I had laying
around the house, but you could easily stop by Home Depot and pick up a new paint
for just a couple of bucks, they have 2 different sizes. On my particular can, I added a working
clock, which I got in my monthly kit from Club Stamp. All rubberstamps and paper are from Club Stamp on this project.
List of Supplies:
Can
Red line tape
Fabric scraps or ribbons
Various ink pads
Various rubberstamps
- Now on
my particular can, I added the clock.
If you decide to do a clock, make sure and get a fairly fat can,
mine was pretty narrow and it was difficult to fit my clock in, and had to
sort of bend the can a bit to get it to fit. I definitely recommend the large paint can from Home Depot
instead. I had hubby drill me a
hold to fit the clock mechanism through.
I decorated the can as follows and then lastly inserted the clock
mechanism.
- Measure
your can and cut paper to fit perfectly around the can and overlap at any
seam but oh a ˝” or so.
- Rubberstamp
images in various colors all over the background paper.
- I
prefer two or three different colors of paper to help break up and give
character to my project. Attached
finished papers to the can using the red line tape. I tried other adhesives and this one
seemed to really hold for me.
- If
your can doesn’t have a handle and you want one, get some heavy duty wire
and attach to your can. I did this
and added a few beads at each end.
- Cut
color coordinated fabric scraps (or ribbons) into 3-4 in x 1 in
pieces. Tie onto the handle,
alternating colors.
- You
can also embellish can with beaded trim.
Mine with the clock didn’t allow for enough space for the trim.

Altered Paint Can
Here is a quick list of potential "Paint
Can kit ideas" from New Baby to Teacher survival kit, etc
Supplies List:
Paint can (can buy new at hardware store)
Paint can opener
Pattern paper
Modge Podge
Glue lines/glue dots
Foam Stamps
Ink pad
Paint
Embellishments
Fibers/Twill
Alcohol inks
- Cut
pattern paper to fit your can to your liking.
- Do any
rubber or foam stamping now (i.e. the Title on the can) on your pattern paper
before you adhere it to the can, makes for a better stamping surface.
- I
inked all the edges of my paper.
- Now on
my can I wanted a color coordinated twill and didn’t have any, so I used
the same paint as I used for the foam stamping and painted the twill. Let dry.
- Use a
paint brush and apply a coat of modge podge - one section at a time – to
the can, I also painted a touch of modge podge onto the ends of the paper
– where it will need more glue to hold it down while drying. I then adhered the paper to the can,
holding the edges down for a bit while the glue started to set up. I then repeated for the rest of the
papers. Let this all dry.
- I then
painted a thin coat of modge podge over the top of the papers all the way
around the can to finish it off. Let dry.
- I used Glue Lines to adhere the twill to
the can.
- I used
1 inch glue lines in a couple of spots at the top of the can to adhere the
funky fibers. I ran two strands of
funky fibers to give lots of umph to them.
- I used
alcohol inks to color my can opener and hung it from the handle of the
paint can.
- I
painted some small blocks using the same paint as above and adhere with
glue dots to the top of the can.
- I then
tied off on one end, wrapped a bunch of fibers around the handle of the
can, then tied off the other end.
Have fun!
